The merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz to form the new pharma corporation occurred on 6 march 1996, a few minutes before midnight, when Daniel Vassella and four managers signed a secret paper which led to Novartis. The deal was done on 24 April 1996 after the Sandoz and the Ciba-Geigy shareholders gave their yes to the merger. The name Novartis is based on the Latin terms, “novae artes” (new skills).
