Biography
American astronaut, a former USAF pilot who flew combat missions in Vietnam. His second space shuttle mission was as commander aboard the Spaceship Challenger. It lifted off on 28 January 1986 at 11:38 AM (EST) and exploded 73 seconds later, killing the entire crew at 46,000 feet (14 km) above the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Scobee was a first-class mathematician and engineer, a friendly and cooperative family man who loved flight and adventure. He was married to Virginia June Kent (now June Scobee Rodgers; born 30 November 1942), with whom he had two children, Kathie R. Scobee Fulgham and Lieutenant General Richard W. Scobee.
