Biography
Monahan grew up in a working class neighborhood and in an Irish Catholic family. His parents divorced when he was six but he remained close to both. His father was a great reader and the literary influence rubbed off on young William who claims he wrote his first screenplay at 12. After graduation from the University of Massachusetts he moved to New York City where he landed free-lance writing assignments and became an editor for Spy magazine. In 1997 he won a Pushcart Prize for short fiction. He was able to sell his novel to Warner Brothers and Monahan was hired to write the screenplay. In 2001 he came to the attention of director Ridley Scott, a contact that led him to be hired for "Kingdom of Heaven." The movie bombed but his reputation was established. One producer, George Nolfi, said of him: "``Bill is probably the best writer working in Hollywood today at creating a sense of time and place in the past. `And he writes some of the best dialogue I've ever read."
Monahan and his wife married in 2001 and they have two children.
William Monahan — Projector with Profile 4/6
William Monahan is a Projector in Human Design – a non-energy type designed to guide and direct others. Projectors make up about 20% of humanity and have a special gift for recognizing and directing the energies and talents of others.
The Projector's strategy is to wait for the right, respectful invitation before contributing their guidance. Without an invitation, the Projector's wisdom is often unrecognized or even rejected.
When William Monahan lives in alignment with their design, they experience success and recognition. The Projector's not-self theme is bitterness – a sign that their wisdom and guidance isn't being valued.
William Monahan has Splenic Authority – a spontaneous, intuitive authority. The Spleen speaks softly and only once, in the moment. It manifests as instinctive knowing, a subtle body signal that immediately recognizes what is healthy and safe. Those with this authority must learn to trust the first impulse.
William Monahan carries the profile 4/6 – Opportunist / Role Model. The 4th line represents the Networker: influence and impact unfold through personal relationships and a strong social network. The 6th line represents the Role Model: a life path in three phases – first experimenting (until ~30), then observing from the "roof" (until ~50), and finally authentically embodying the role model.
