Ambroise-Auguste Liébeault

French physician considered the father of modern hypnotherapy. He made many advancements for the field of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, such as co-founding the Nancy School School of Hypnosis. The Nancy School is based around a hypnosis-centered approach to therapy in contrast to the previously used hysteria-centered approach, which was used by the Paris School as well as the Salpetriere Hospital. A main, fundamental belief of the Nancy School was that hypnosis was a normal phenomenon in contrast to the previous thought that hypnosis was a product of hysteria. In addition to the foundation of the Nancy School, Liébeault published several books on his theories, techniques, and results in working with hypnosis. On 18 February 1904 he died in Nancy, leaving behind a strong legacy and influence on the still developing field of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
