Biography
From an early age, Walton began emulating recordings by Nat King Cole, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. He played with the Jazztet, led by Benny Golson and Art Farmer, from 1958 to 1961. In April 1959, he recorded an alternate take of "Giant Steps" with John Coltrane, though he did not solo.
In the early 1960s, Walton joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers as a pianist-arranger for three years, demonstrating a keen sense of arranging in originals such as "Ugetsu" and "Mosaic". By the late 1960s he was part of the house rhythm section at Prestige Records, releasing his own recordings. He also recorded with Sonny Criss, Pat Martino, Eric Kloss, Charles McPherson, Abbey Lincoln, and Lee Morgan. During the mid-1970s, he led the funk group Mobius.
In January 2010, he was inducted into the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters.
Walton died on August 19, 2013, at his home in Brooklyn, New York at the age of 79.
The Human Design of Cedar Walton: Generator 2/4
Cedar Walton is a Generator in Human Design – an energy type with a defined Sacral Center. Generators make up about 36% of humanity and possess an enormous, sustainable life force energy.
The Generator's strategy is to respond to impulses from life rather than initiating. When the Sacral Center responds with a clear "yes" (a gut feeling, an inner spark), that's the right path.
When Cedar Walton lives in alignment with their design, they experience deep satisfaction and fulfillment. The Generator's not-self theme is frustration – a sign that the sacral energy isn't following the right things.
Cedar Walton has Emotional Authority – the most common authority. Decisions should never be made in an emotional high or low, but only when emotional clarity settles in. "Sleep on it" is meant literally here. The emotional wave needs time to run its course.
Cedar Walton carries the profile 2/4 – Hermit / Opportunist. The 2nd line represents the Natural: a natural talent that is often unconscious and only activated when called out by others. The 4th line represents the Networker: influence and impact unfold through personal relationships and a strong social network.
The incarnation cross "Right Angle Cross of Laws 4" describes the overarching life purpose and direction of Cedar Walton in Human Design. It consists of the four gate activations of Sun and Earth (personality and design) and only becomes felt when one lives their strategy and authority.
