Biography
In 1924 he married Cécile Sabouraud, a talented pianist, and they had two sons Laurent and Mathieu in 1925 and 1926; a third son, Thierry, was born nine years later.
The Babar books began as a bedtime story Cécile invented for their children, Mathieu and Laurent, who took it to their father, a painter, and asked him to illustrate it. He turned it into a picture book, with text, which was published by a family-run publishing house, Le jardin des modes.
After the first book Histoire de Babar (The Story of Babar), six more titles followed before Jean de Brunhoff died of tuberculosis on 16 October 1937 at the age of 37.
Laurent, who had followed in his father's footsteps as a painter, continued the Babar the Elephant stories created by his parents.
Jean de Brunhoff as a Manifestor 6/2 in Human Design
Jean de Brunhoff is a Manifestor in Human Design – the only type designed to initiate things independently. Manifestors make up only about 9% of humanity and are naturally independent.
The Manifestor's strategy is to inform others clearly and early enough about their intentions before taking action. This reduces resistance and allows the Manifestor's natural impact to unfold freely.
When Jean de Brunhoff lives in alignment with their design, they experience deep peace. The Manifestor's not-self theme is anger – a sign that the natural urge to initiate is being suppressed or obstructed.
Jean de Brunhoff has Emotional Authority – the most common authority. Decisions should never be made in an emotional high or low, but only when emotional clarity settles in. "Sleep on it" is meant literally here. The emotional wave needs time to run its course.
Jean de Brunhoff carries the profile 6/2 – Role Model / Hermit. The 6th line represents the Role Model: a life path in three phases – first experimenting (until ~30), then observing from the "roof" (until ~50), and finally authentically embodying the role model. The 2nd line represents the Natural: a natural talent that is often unconscious and only activated when called out by others.
The incarnation cross "Left Angle Cross of Separation 2" describes the overarching life purpose and direction of Jean de Brunhoff in Human Design. It consists of the four gate activations of Sun and Earth (personality and design) and only becomes felt when one lives their strategy and authority.
