After he had retired in 1989, he revealed doping throughout his career. In 1998, Thurau was fined 20'000 DM for forgery. In 2012, he stole 49'000 DM insurance benefits (intended for his father Helmut) for himself.
He is divorced and has two sons (Björn and Urs), both also road bicycle racers. After his cycling career, Thurau works as a professional tennis coach and as a real estate agent. He lives in Switzerland with his partner.
