Biography
May studied under the German theologian Paul Tillich who was his mentor and friend. May earned his Master of Divinity degree in New York in 1938 following his studies with Tillich. He was a Congregationalist minister for two years in New Jersey. Realizing his theological training did not adequately equip him to deal with his parishioner's problems, he left the ministry and sought a doctorate in clinical psychology. While in his 30s, he was hospitalized for 18 months with tuberculosis during which he studied theology, psychology and existential philosophy. He said the experience of facing death helped him to face life and this insight developed into "Love and Will."
A gifted therapist and writer, his works influenced many in the political and cultural movements of the civil rights Vietnam War era. May moved to Tiburon, California in 1975 and became an important influence among humanistic and existential psychologists. May, who coined the phrase "Age of Anxiety" in the 1950s, said in 1987 had become the "Age of Despair." He said, "One word frees us of all the pain in our lives. The word is love. My theme is that human life begins on the far side of despair." May was a visiting professor at Harvard, Princeton and Yale and toward the end of his life, lectured on the progressions of psychology.
May was married and divorced twice. He had two daughters and a son. He died in Tiburon 10/22/94.
Rollo May as a Reflector 5/1 in Human Design
Rollo May is a Reflector in Human Design – the rarest of all types at only about 1% of humanity. Reflectors have no defined centers in their bodygraph and therefore mirror their environment. They are the mirror of society.
The Reflector's strategy is to wait at least one complete lunar cycle (about 28 days) before making important decisions. During this time, the moon transits all 64 gates, providing the Reflector with clarity.
When Rollo May lives in alignment with their design, life unfolds with surprise and wonder. The Reflector's not-self theme is disappointment – a sign of being in an environment that doesn't suit them.
Rollo May is a Reflector with no inner (body-based) authority – because not a single center is defined. Instead, the lunar cycle is the most reliable decision-making compass. By waiting a full lunar cycle of about 28 days while talking with trusted people, the right decision crystallizes.
Rollo May carries the profile 5/1 – Heretic / Investigator. The 5th line represents the Hero and Savior: others project expectations and hopes onto this line, which can deliver practical solutions for universal problems. The 1st line represents the Investigator: a deep need for a solid foundation and thorough knowledge before feeling secure.
The incarnation cross "Left Angle Cross of Wishes 1" describes the overarching life purpose and direction of Rollo May in Human Design. It consists of the four gate activations of Sun and Earth (personality and design) and only becomes felt when one lives their strategy and authority.
