Uma Thurman

American actress who has performed in a variety of Hollywood films, from romantic comedies and dramas to science fiction and action movies, along with her acclaimed work in television and on the stage.

She rose to international prominence with her performance as Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film Pulp Fiction, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. Often hailed as Tarantino's muse, she reunited with the director to play the main role in Kill Bill: Volume 1 and 2 (2003, 2004), which brought her a BAFTA Award nomination and two additional Golden Globe Award nominations.

Thurman won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Film for her performance in the made-for-HBO film Hysterical Blindness (2002) and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her five-episode role in the NBC musical series Smash (2012).

The daughter of a Swedish psychotherapist mother (who was once married to Timothy Leary) and an American dad who was a professor of Asian religion, she was raised to do her own thinking and be her own person. Thurman got her own apartment in Manhattan when she was 16. Tall and willowy, she began her career of modelling while still in high school and launched her film career in 1987 in a low-budget thriller, Kiss Daddy Goodnight. Some of her noted films reaching star status were Dangerous Liaisons in 1988 and Henry and June in 1990. In March 1955, she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Pulp Fiction.

Thurman's marriage to 12-year-older British actor Gary Oldman lasted only 18 months; they divorced in early 1993. She met actor Timothy Hutton in March 1995, when they worked together on Beautiful Girls and they began a relationship for a short period.
