Vittorio Pozzo

Italian soccer player, manager and journalist. He won as head coach of the Italian team at two FIFA World Cups (1934 and 1938) and also the Olympic Football Tournament in 1936. Earlier, as a player, he began his career in Zurich (with the Grasshoppers), then he changed to FC Torino, Italy. He retired from soccer playing 1911. He served as the technical director of Torino from 1912 to 1922. After completing his studies, he joined Pirelli, where he became manager, a position he would leave for the Italian national team. In 1948 he retired as head coach and became a sport journalist; however, he faced hostility in this profession due to his successes under the fascist regime. He then withdrew completely from public life, returning to his home town of Turin. In 1949 he was one of the eyewitnesses to the plane crash of his Torino FC, in which many of his former players lost their lives. Pozzo had to identify them. He died on 21 December 1968 at age 82.
