Biography
Between October 1923 and May 1924 he sang for the Victor Co. in Camden and New York making a series of records in German with songs from operetta and folk.
In the following years Steier sang several times as a guest at the Bayreuth Festival. In 1928 he undertook a longer tour through South America.
In his last years, Steier dealt intensively with the German-language folk song. At the Carl-Lindström-AG he recorded for the labels Beka and Odeon well over 100 records of his folk song performances of carefully researched historical texts and melodies. It is thanks to his diligence that many old folk songs have been preserved for posterity in authentic interpretations.
He died on 16 January 1936 in Berlin, aged 57.
