Biography
German Physicist. In 1913 he discovered the Doppler Effect in the radiation released by rapidly-moving charged particles, known as the Stark effect. He quitted physics in 1922 to start his own porcelain-making business, which soon failed. He subsequently tried to re-enter academia, but a dour personality and his increasing denunciation of "Jewish physics" make him unpopular, and he had been rejected by six German universities by 1928. In 1930 he joined the Nazi party.
Stark's final humiliation came in 1947, when he was sentenced to four years in a labor camp by a German de-Nazification court.
He was awarded the Nobel Price in Physics, 1919.
He died 21 June 1957, Traunstein, Germany.
