He won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, establishing a new national record (formerly held by Christian Plaziat). In 2017, he won the gold at the London world championships. He won Gold in the Decathlon event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Five years after winning in London, he again won the Gold medal at the 2022 Eugene world championships (USA).
Mayer was born in Argenteuil, a commune in the northwest suburbs of Paris, to André and Carole Mayer, a triathlete and tennis player respectively. He has three brothers.
