Biography

American jazz singer, although may be more accurate to classify her as a "soul" singer because of the emotion that permeates her material, or as an eclectic because of her signature blend of soul, jazz, blues, gospel and pop. Simone’s version of George Gershwin’s "I Loves You Porgy," 1959, became the only Top 40 Hit of her career on June 22 , but her music never gained a mass audience during her life.

The sixth of eight children, Eunice Kathleen Waymon’s mother was a minister who worked as a maid, and her father was a handyman. From the time she was old enough to pull herself up onto the piano bench, she loved music. In 1938 (at age 6) she became the official pianist of the Methodist Chapel of Tryon and began to attend school for black children.

Her mother’s employer paid for her first piano lessons, and she gave her first recital spring 1943. This marked an important time in her life because she personally experienced racism for the first time. Her parents, initially seated in the first row at the recital, were moved so that "whites" could be "properly" seated, and her deep commitment to fight racism was born. Later the town of Tyron got together and created a fund to help her realize the full extent of her dream to become a classical pianist. In 1950, she won a scholarship to study the piano at the Juilliard School in New York. When her family moved to Philadelphia, she applied for a fellowship at the renowned Curtis Institute, but her request was denied. In 1954, she took a job at a bar and grill in Atlantic City. Knowing her mother would not approve of her working there, she adopted the stage name of Nina Simone. Her success at the club led to other gigs in the area, and in 1957, she got a recording session with Bethlehem Records. Her first jazz album, "Little Girl Blue," was successful nationwide.

Her initial success continued, and over the next five years, she recorded ten albums.

Nina Simone — Manifesting Generator with Profile 3/5

Manifesting Generator 3/5 — Design at a Glance

Nina Simone revealed herself as a hybrid being, combining the constant energy of a Generator with the lightning-fast assertiveness of a Manifestor. Her design offered her a steady, sacral energy source, which was channeled through an active connection to the motor centers and the throat center. This allowed her to skip steps and draw things into her life at a speed that pure generators did not possess. This speed was a double-edged sword: while she could act efficiently, she tended to overlook important steps, leading to frustration when she had to backtrack to fill gaps. Additionally, she responded to numerous impulses simultaneously, leading her to pursue multiple projects in parallel. Crucial to her satisfaction was the strategy of not initiating but responding to inner signals. Only when her sacral center gave a clear 'yes' could she unleash her creative power. In this state, she fell into a playful mode that sought variety. The demand to focus on one thing alone was contrary to her nature. Instead, she found deep satisfaction in parallel work, as long as her inner authority confirmed the various directions and she did not fight against her own rhythm.

Emotional Authority

Nina Simone showed herself as someone who never made decisions immediately but consciously let them rest until the initial emotional wave subsided. Her design carried emotional authority, meaning that her defined emotional center was her inner decision-making instance – regardless of which other centers were also defined in her chart. This configuration subjected her to a constant emotional ups and downs, coloring her perception of the world strongly through her current mood. What appeared inspiring in one moment could be perceived negatively in the next. However, this first impression was only a snapshot and not necessarily the truth, so spontaneous actions based on intense emotions could have negative consequences. Nina Simone recognized that patience and multiple 'sleeping on' of decisions were necessary to gain clarity. Only when the intense feelings subsided and emotional distance emerged did calmness set in. This process was particularly important for long-term decisions that significantly shaped her life path. She consciously hesitated to ensure that her choice was based on deep, comprehensive insight and not on a passing mood surge.

The 3/5 Profile — Martyr / Heretic

Nina Simone's design inclined towards a heroic, adventurous aura, paired with the role of the storyteller. As a carrier of Profile 3/5, the experimenter and hero, she showed herself as someone who had to try everything herself first before believing it. The Line 3 of the adventurer drove her to gather practical knowledge through her own experiences and also failures. This self-acquired understanding then served the Line 5, the hero line, to solve other people's problems and win their admiration. Her authenticity was crucial; actions had to come from her inner mood to be effective. At the same time, she projected a powerful presence that could be off-putting to others, especially in crisis times. This unease led her to use her strength often only in emergencies. The tension between the need for adaptability and the risk of failing in public shaped her dynamics. When she experimented and failed in public view, it was painful, yet these practical life experiences made her attractive to others who wanted to learn from her story. Her path was marked by the necessity of replacing innocence with experience and overcoming resistance through her own strength, without losing herself.

Triple Split Definition — Defined & Open Centers

Nina Simone's Human Design profile indicated a tendency towards constant mental intensity and deep emotional processing. Her defined Head and Ajna Centers created a persistent pressure to question and form concepts. This mental process was her constant companion; she was always thinking and could neither stop nor control her mental activity. At the same time, her defined Heart Center gave her a clear will and the desire to determine her own life. She wanted to be recognized for her contributions and used her energy purposefully to bring her visions into the material world.

This internal structure was fueled by her defined Sacral Center, which provided an enormous source of vitality and generative energy. As a Generator, she was designed to react to life rather than initiate. Her energy was only fully available when she received an affirmative response from her Sacral Center to a request. This protected her from exhaustion and frustration that can arise when working against her natural energy flow. Additionally, her defined Solar Plexus Center endowed her with emotional depth; her feelings served as her inner authority. She needed time to wait out the emotional wave before gaining clarity and making decisions.

In contrast, her open G Center revealed a vulnerability regarding identity and direction. She tended to blend with her environment and often sought orientation through others. The Non-Self pattern of this center could lead her to constantly seek a fixed identity or the 'right' place, which could lead to uncertainty if she found herself in the wrong place. Her open Spleen Center also made her susceptible to external influences on her well-being; she could absorb the health or misfortune of others, which could lead to spontaneous, fear-driven decisions. Finally, her open Root Center absorbed external stress, which could lead to a feeling of pressure that was not her own but came from her environment. This combination of strong inner energy and openness to external influences shaped her unique dynamics.

Channels for powerful impact, community and abstract comprehension.

Nina Simone exhibited an immense, almost insatiable urgency to act in the here and now. This tendency stemmed from Channel Charisma 34-20, which channeled raw physiological energy from the Sacral Center directly into the expressive power of the Throat Center. This mechanism generated a speed that left little room for hesitation; she could hardly sit still, as her generative power had to be immediately translated into action. However, this self-empowerment required that she only give her energy to things that truly fulfilled her to avoid obsession.

Parallel to this, Nina Simone sought her place within larger contexts. Channel Community 37-40 connected her emotional depth with her willpower, teaching her that true connections and 'business'—in the sense of mutual support—required time and careful scrutiny. She understood that loyalty and contribution to the group went beyond mere material transactions.

Mentally, she underwent a constant process of meaning-making. Channel Abstraction 64-47 drove her to filter every experience through a kaleidoscope of mental images to reveal hidden stories and perspectives. Although this mind was often confusingly active, patient waiting for clarity rewarded her with unique insights she could share.

Additionally, Gate 55 shaped her emotional awareness through intense mood swings, while Gate 59 steered her genetic strategy for bonding and pairing without personal preferences. Gate 61 promoted her struggle for inner truth and silence, Gate 26 enabled her to sell innovations in a conservative environment, Gate 63 used doubt to improve patterns, Gate 51 showed strong willpower in shock situations, and Gate 62 provided logical detail work and pattern recognition.

Individual Circuitry — Circuit Signature

Nina Simone's design indicated a tendency towards cyclical emotional waves that drew from the past. This resulted from the Meaning-Making Circuit, which connected her Head and Ajna Centers. This configuration promoted abstract thinking and the visual comprehension of past events to understand and share their meaning. Parallel to this, a separate power was evident in the Ego Circuit. Here, Channel Community connected her Heart with her Solar Plexus Center. This created a dynamic of giving and taking and mutual support, but without a direct connection to the life force of the Sacral Center. Therefore, rest periods were necessary to build resources for the tribe. A third, independent energy source formed the Integration Circuit. Through Channel Charisma, Throat and Sacral Centers were directly coupled. This allowed her to draw power from reacting to life and live it authentically through present expressions. These three groups—the abstract understanding of the past, cooperative support in the social field, and vital, spontaneous expression power—existed as separate, not directly connected systems. They shaped Nina Simone's experiential world as a combination of reflected emotion, social resonance, and immediate physical presence, each with its own rhythms and demands.

Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix 1

Nina Simone's design carried the signature of the right cross of the sleeping phoenix. This configuration pointed to a profound, often unconscious power that worked not through external control but through inner resonance. The name 'sleeping phoenix' refers to a potential that lies hidden in rest or restraint, until it is activated by specific inner conditions. It was not an obvious, loud presence, but a subtle, almost mystical energy that worked in the background.

This structure described a life dynamics that was less based on strategic planning and more on trusting one's own impulses, often not fully understood. The energy of this cross promoted a kind of authenticity that could not be explained but only lived. It was someone whose impact depended strongly on the quality of their inner stillness and their ability to focus on the essential without having to express it immediately. The 'sleeping' aspect emphasized that the full power of this configuration only came into play when external expectations receded and space was made for their often intuitive truth. It was an energy of transformation that unfolded its effect not through effort but through letting go and surrender.

Saturn Return · Uranus Opposition · Chiron Return · 2nd Saturn Return — Life Cycles

Nina Simone's design tended towards deep, often disruptive transformation processes that reflected in her interpersonal bonds. This structure described not a static stability but a dynamic in which old forms were regularly questioned and dissolved to make room for new, more authentic configurations. The Uranus aspect in her chart stands for this power of liberation and sudden breakthrough, shaking established structures to free individuals from limiting patterns.

In 1971, at the age of 38, she divorced Andrew 'Andy' Stroud. This event served as a concrete proof of the described mechanism: It was not mere coincidence but an expression of an inner necessity to end a relationship that no longer matched her growing autonomy and changed self-understanding. The separation marked a moment of release, in which Nina Simone freed herself from a bond that hindered her development. Instead of clinging to outdated roles, her design allowed for a radical cut. This act of self-determination showed as a necessary step to restore her integrity and open up to new, freer life designs. The divorce was thus the visible expression of an inner maturation accelerated and made visible by the Uranus influence.

Manifesting Generator · Emotional Authority — Synthesis

Nina Simone was a Manifesting Generator, whose life was marked by a constant interplay between fast, impulsive energy and the need for emotional maturity. The connection of the Sacral Center with the Throat Center (Channel of Charisma) gave her an immediate, powerful way of expression that quickly set things in motion. At the same time, emotional authority required a period of inner clarification to make decisions from a stable base – a process that stood against the urge for immediate action.

This tension field between the urge for immediate manifestation and the need for emotional depth formed the core of her personality. As an Explorer and Hero (3/5 Profile), she continuously sought new experiences to gain knowledge and share it with others. The defined Mental Center strengthened this process by constantly generating questions and inspirations, which, however, had to be filtered and transformed into experience through the cyclical nature of the Perceiving Circuit, to find a deeper meaning. A documented event, the divorce in 1971, points to the challenges associated with navigating between these inner forces.
