Chilean politician from the Christian Democratic Party, lawyer, author, professor and former senator. He was the first president of Chile after dictator Augusto Pinochet, and his election marked the Chilean transition to democracy in 1990. Despite resistance from elements of the Chilean military and government after his election, Patricio Aylwin was staunch in his support for the Chilean Truth and Reconciliation Commission which exposed the Chilean government's brutalities.

On 18 December 2015 Aylwin was hospitalized in Santiago after suffering a cranial injury in a fall at home. He died on 19 April 2016, aged 97.

The Human Design of Patricio Aylwin: Manifesting Generator 4/1

HD Mechanics · Chapter 1/9

Manifesting Generator 4/1 — Design at a Glance

Patricio Aylwin demonstrated himself as someone who possessed hybrid energy from the speed of Manifestor and the sacral power of Generator. His design tended to skip steps and manage projects in parallel. As a manifesting generator, he had constant sacral energy, which allowed him to quickly draw things into his life. However, this speed carries risks: important steps were often skipped, leading him back to close gaps—a potential source of frustration. Additionally, Patricio Aylwin tended to pursue multiple tasks simultaneously by reacting to various impulses. Without strategic alignment, this creative drive could quickly turn counterproductive.

The central mechanics of his design required reaction rather than initiation. Only when the sacral center gave a clear “yes” and inner authority agreed was action advisable. Regular checks on ongoing projects ensured resonance remained intact. When applied correctly, Patricio Aylwin drew deep satisfaction from his work. The compulsion to finish one thing before starting another did not suit him; instead, his creativity flourished in the playful creation mode that integrated variety and fun. His energy worked most effectively when he maintained this balance between rapid implementation and sacral confirmation.

Emotional Authority

Patricio Aylwin showed a decision-making strategy based on patience and temporal distance. His design carried emotional authority, meaning his defined Emotional Center was the source of his inner guidance—regardless of other defined centers in his chart. This configuration followed a natural emotional wave characterized by constant mood swings.

The world appeared to him colored by his current feeling state; something could seem inspiring at one moment and negative the next. An immediate impulse or spontaneous reaction merely represented a snapshot, not the deeper truth. Quick decisions made directly from such an emotional peak often risked negative consequences as they were based on transient states.

For Patricio Aylwin, it was essential to take time for a decision to mature. This process required conscious waiting and multiple “sleeping over” of important questions. By hesitating and not acting immediately, he allowed intense feelings to subside. With the setting in of emotional distance, clarity and calm eventually set in. Only after this cycle had run its course and the emotional wave subsided could he access a grounded, stable truth necessary for long-term life decisions.

The 4/1 Profile — Opportunist / Investigator

Patricio Aylwin was shown to be someone of unshakable inner constancy. His design as Profile 4/1, known as the “Networker/Researcher” profile, was the only fixed pattern in Human Design mechanics. This meant his innate essence was deeply rooted and he rarely strayed from his individual path. This structure marked the transition from “I” to “You,” making his personality stable but also hard to change.

Line 4 in his design gave him transpersonal intuition and a large emotional capacity—a “big heart.” However, this heart protected itself rigorously: well-meaning attempts at change by others or lack of respect for his individuality led him to exclude these people. This often appeared externally as stubbornness or inability to accept criticism but was actually a protective mechanism against the misuse of his power and intuition (Gate 34).

Simultaneously, Line 1 with Gate 40 formed his inner foundation. Here lay the key to his willpower in the ability to rest. Rest periods were not optional for Patricio Aylwin but essential to build energy. Only after regeneration was complete could he act effectively. Ignoring this rhythm or putting pressure on it triggered mistrust from him. His strength lay in accepting himself and standing firm as a “rock in the storm” once he knew his path.

Triple Split Definition — Defined & Open Centers

Patricio Aylwin was someone who operated under constant internal pressure to ask questions and find answers. His defined Head and Ajna centers created a perpetual mental machine that generated inspiration; however, he was not destined to act on these thoughts immediately but rather to inspire others or provoke thought in them. This intellectual urgency met his emotional depth: The defined Solar Plexus center challenged him to make decisions only after riding the wave of emotion to gain clarity.

His energy source lay in the defined Sacral Center, which endowed him with immense vital force. As a Manifesting Generator, he had the ability to directly implement through his defined Throat Center, driven by strong willpower from the defined Heart Center. This allowed him to keep promises and use his resources self-determinedly as long as he waited for the correct sacral response.

At the same time, Patricio Aylwin was without a fixed identity template due to his open G Center; he reflected his environment and found direction only in fitting contexts rather than initiating it himself. Furthermore, his open Root Center absorbed external stress, making him vulnerable to others' pressure. The challenge lay in balancing mental haste through emotional patience and sacral response instead of succumbing to the temptation to fight against resistance with willpower or internalize foreign stress.

Channel 20-34: Charisma — Channels & Gates

Patricio Aylwin exhibited an enormous physiological urgency that drove him to act in absolute moments. His design tended to swiftly convert generative energy into direct action, often making it difficult for him to sit still or remain calm. This dynamic primarily stemmed from the Channel of Charisma 34-20 in his personality. This channel connects the raw, physiological power of Gate 34 (Power) in the Sacral Center with Gate 20 (Now) in the Throat Center. The mechanics here describe a speed at which the urge to manifest meets reaction almost without delay. For Patricio Aylwin, it was essential to channel this intense impulse through sacral response – that is, waiting to be properly addressed from outside – to avoid chaos and generate true vitality. His energy served self-reinforcement; it was not meant to be tapped by others but arose from a deep absorption in activities correct and satisfying for him.

In the background, further structures were at work: The Channel of Dedication 44-26 linked instinctive alertness with ego strength, giving him an intuitive sense of what his tribe needed before he knew it himself. The Channel of Community 37-40 promoted a need for fair agreements and emotional balance in relationships. Additionally, Gates like Gate 5 (Rhythm) and Gate 29 (Persistence) shaped his personality, while in the design Gates like Gate 45 (Tribe Level) and Gate 4 (Formulation) supported a logical, future-oriented structure. Patricio Aylwin's strength lay in directing this rapid manifestation energy through inner guidance rather than being carried away by sheer momentum.

Tribal Circuitry — Circuit Signature

Patricio Aylwin showed a tendency to draw power from direct reaction to life and make it immediately effective in the present moment. This resulted from the Integration Circuit with Channel 20-34 (Charisma), connecting Throat and Sacral Centers. This configuration allowed him to channel intuitive impulses through proper behavior, presenting himself acoustically as well as individually strong.

As a person of triple definition, his design consisted of three separate, not directly connected energy groups. A second group included Heart, Solar Plexus, and Spleen Center (Ego Circuit). Here, Channels 26-44 (Dedication) and 37-40 (Community), promoting cooperation, mutual support, and resource exchange, were at work. Since this group had no connection to the Sacral Center, rest periods for collective regeneration of energy were necessary.

The third isolated group consisted of Head and Ajna Centers (Soul Finding Circuit), connected by Channel 64-47 (Abstraction). This area dealt with reflecting on the past, finding meaning behind past events, and sharing emotional insights. Since these centers were not linked to other groups, these abilities existed as parallel, independent power fields: immediate effect in the present moment, cooperative resource building in community, and abstract processing of past experiences.

Juxtaposition Cross of Power

Patricio Aylwin's design established a fundamental tension that moved between the internal claim to self-determination and external forces of influence. His system bore the signature of the Juxtaposition Cross of Power, a configuration marked by contradictory forces. This structure did not produce linear development but rather constant friction between the desire for control over one's fate and the necessity to assert oneself in a field of dualities.

The Cross of Power describes in Human Design the dynamics through which authority is not a static possession but arises as a result of continuous negotiation with the environment. Patricio Aylwin lived in a reality where recognition and influence were often only attainable by navigating opposites. It was less about exercising pure dominance than finding balance within a context full of contradictions. His inner authority had to continually assert itself against external expectations or structural constraints without losing its integrity.

This mechanism shaped his life through an ongoing confrontation with the question of when leadership stemmed from internal conviction and when it arose as a reaction to external pressure. The duality of this cross meant that power was never simply given but always negotiated in the tension field between self-responsibility and others' demands. Thus, Patricio Aylwin demonstrated himself in a stance that did not resolve these contradictions but integrated them as driving forces of his development.

Saturn Return · Uranus Opposition · Chiron Return · 2nd Saturn Return — Life Cycles

Patricio Aylwin's design revealed itself through a structure aimed at inner stability and rhythmic development. His path was marked by phases of consolidation, where he had to learn to carefully preserve his energy and avoid premature expenditure. This attitude formed the foundation for his later work.

The first Saturn Return marked the transition into adult responsibility. In this life phase, earlier experiences condensed into a solid base. Patricio Aylwin faced the task of establishing his identity independently of external expectations. It was a time of testing where he learned to deal with the limits of his own nature and draw strength from it.

The Uranus Opposition then brought a period of liberation. Here, there was a need for freedom from old bindings and structures. Patricio Aylwin had to question which parts of his earlier self still served him and which held him back. This process was often turbulent but led to necessary liberation for the next developmental stage.

With the Chiron Return came a phase of blooming. If he followed his inner authority, his purpose unfolded increasingly. It was not about healing in the sense of repair but experiencing the full meaning of his existence. His life became coherent and he could bring his gifts with greater clarity.

The second Saturn Return crowned this process. It stood for mastery of one's life task. Patricio Aylwin showed himself as someone who had distilled wisdom from his experiences. His presence was now marked by a calm authority based on years of inner work. He had learned to use his energy efficiently and thus achieve lasting impact.

Manifesting Generator · Emotional Authority — Synthesis

Patricio Aylwin was a Manifesting Generator whose life was profoundly shaped by the dynamic between action and reaction. The connection of his Sacral Center with the Throat Center gave him the ability to quickly initiate things, yet his inner authority challenged him to respond first to impulses rather than initiating himself. This combination of quick energy and emotional clarity created a thread of purposeful activity that was channeled through careful consideration and waiting for the right moment. His defined Heart Center reinforced this tendency towards self-determination and an unshakable will to pursue his own endeavors – always in harmony with his inner truth.

A central paradox in his design lay in the tension between the need for community (Channel 40/37) and the ability for independent decision-making (emotional center). He was geared towards forming relationships and contributing within groups, yet simultaneously needed time for emotional processes and developing clear standpoints. This apparent contradiction led to a complex personality that acted both cooperatively and independently – a dynamic interplay between the desire for connection and the necessity of inner autonomy.
