Biography
German Jewish mathematician, known for his work in algebra, who introduced injective modules in 1940. He is the eponym of Baer rings and Baer groups.
Baer stayed at Princeton University and was a visiting scholar at the nearby Institute for Advanced Study from 1935 to 1937. For a short while he lived in North Carolina. From 1938 to 1956 he worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He returned to Germany in 1956.
He died of heart failure on 22 October 1979 at age 77 in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2016 the Reinhold Baer Prize for the best PhD thesis in group theory was set up in his honour.
