1st Duke of Wellington Arthur Wellesley

Anglo-Irish general and statesman most noted for his defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1818. Known as "The Iron Duke," he originally entered the army at the age of 18, rising rapidly in the ranks for the next 20 years to become a commander in 1809. After his defeat of Napoleon, he went on to become the Prime Minister of England.

Wellesley was married by his brother Gerald, a clergyman, to Kitty Pakenham in St George's Church, Dublin on 10 April 1806. They had two children: Arthur was born in 1807 and Charles was born in 1808. The marriage proved unsatisfactory and the two spent years apart, while Wellesley was campaigning and afterwards. Kitty grew depressed, and Wellesley pursued other sexual and romantic partners.

Wellesley died after a stroke on 14 September 1852 at age 83 in Walmer Castle, Kent, England.
