Biography
American author, actress and noted family, the granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film "The Razor's Edge" in 1947 and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in "All About Eve."
In 1971 she took over from Lauren Bacall the role of Margo Channing in the Broadway production of "Applause" and in 1983, Baxter replaced Bette Davis in the TV series "Hotel" which she stayed with until her death. With over 50 films to her acclaim, Baxter worked with some of Hollywood's most illustrious directors.
Baxter's first marriage to John Hodiak 1946-1953 was followed by a marriage in 1960 to Randolph Galt that lasted until 1969. While married to Galt she turned her back on Hollywood to live on a cattle station in the Australian outback with a primitive, isolated lifestyle. She wrote of her change of lifestyle and final disillusionment in the book "Intermission: A True Story" which was released in 1976 with high acclaim. Baxter married again, in 1977 to David Klee, a prominent stockbroker. It was a brief marriage; Klee died unexpectedly from illness.
Baxter suffered a brain aneurysm on 4 December 1985, while hailing a taxi on Madison Avenue in New York City. She remained on life support for eight days in New York's Lenox Hill hospital, until family members agreed that brain function had ceased. She died on 12 December, aged 62.
