Biography

American advocate, writer, musician and actor, and the only child of entertainers Cher and Sonny Bono. Originally known as their daughter and named Chastity Sun Bono, today he is known as Chaz Bono, a transgender man (or "trans man"). Between 2008 and 2010, he underwent female-to-male gender transition. In May 2010, he legally changed his gender and name. A documentary on Bono's experience, Becoming Chaz, was screened at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and later made its television debut on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Bono was named Chastity Sun Bono after the film Chastity, which was produced by Sonny and in which Cher (in her first solo role in a feature film) played a bisexual woman. When Sonny and Cher divorced in 1975, Cher had legal custody of Chastity but the young Bono was always allowed to spend time with both parents. Sonny made a point of living nearby in order that Chastity had free access to see him. Shielded from the glare of publicity while growing up, Chastity Bono graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in 1987 and went to the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

Bono began writing songs with a pal, Chance, and they formed a group with four young men. In January 1994, Bono became the vocalist and co-leader of a rock group called "Ceremony." The group's debut album was entitled "Hand Out Your Poetry." In 1994, Chas' lover died of cancer after a painful battle. A year later Bono came out publicly as a lesbian in the gay publication, "The Advocate." The article that Bono wrote was life changing.

In 1996 Bono joined GLAAD, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, becoming the entertainment industry's unofficial advisor on all things homosexual, wielding growing clout in Hollywood. A reasonable, not rabid, activist, Bono aimed at aiding an increase of understanding and tolerance. Bono worked as their media director until leaving in 1998 to pursue other interests.

Chaz Bono — Generator with Profile 3/5

Generator 3/5 — Design at a Glance

Chaz Bono's design shows a tendency towards high endurance in the realization of his heart projects. This strength comes from his strongly pronounced Sacral Center as a Generator type. Generators have plenty of energy and are extremely enduring, comparable to workhorses if they are motivated for their task.

The central mechanism is not initiating but responding to inner impulses. The energy of the Sacral Center becomes free primarily when it can respond to signals from life. The strategy is: react to a life signal and act as soon as the center gives a clear 'yes'.

If Chaz Bono uses this energy in harmony with his design, it leads to deep satisfaction and fulfillment. If he ignores these impulses or compulsively initiates things that he actually has no interest in, frustration and lack of energy result. Two stumbling blocks are particularly relevant here: First, wasting energy on tasks without inner resonance, which tends towards burnout. Second, holding back from working on heart projects even though there is still plenty of power available. He succeeds when he reacts from the gut and does not try to actively push things.

Sacral Authority

Chaz Bono's design shows a tendency to make decisions not through cognitive analysis but through immediate physical resonance. This configuration appears as someone who responds to external stimuli with a clear inner response – often audible as grunting, an affirming 'Mhm', or a rejecting 'Hm-hm'. These signals come from the defined Sacral Center, which carries Chaz Bono's internal authority.

The mechanics behind this are specific: The sacral authority is only possible for Generator types and greatly simplifies the decision-making process as strategy and inner instance coincide here. A prerequisite for this is an open Emotional Center that prevents emotional waves from overlaying the clear physical response. When Chaz Bono's Sacral motor responded to a stimulus, vitality emerged – a feeling of aliveness and seemingly inexhaustible energy. This allowed him to perform tasks with great enthusiasm, fully in the flow of the moment without seeking external purpose.

Additionally, the Spleen Center acts as a supporting instance. As it is activated and possibly directly connected to the Sacral Center, this gives Chaz Bono quick, instinctive access to his physical well-being. This connection allows spontaneous reactions and decisions that arise from a deep intuitive perception of 'rightness' in the now. The challenge always lay in perceiving and trusting this gut feeling to ensure satisfaction and sustainable energy.

The 3/5 Profile — Martyr / Heretic

Chaz Bono revealed through his design as someone who initially remains radically skeptical and must try everything himself before accepting it. This inner stance of the experimenter contrasts with the external expectation to act as a hero or problem solver in crisis situations. Profile 3/5 describes exactly this tension: Line 3 drives learning through trial and error, while line 5 prompts others to expect wisdom and practical solutions from Chaz Bono.

This configuration makes him attractive to his environment as he shares a wealth of practical experience. Yet, this role harbors danger: If he fails in the public space with his experiments, the hero projection of others collapses, which is felt particularly painfully. Line 3 teaches that good questions are crucial and doubts must be weeded out to arrive at answers. At the same time, line 5 demands calm during crises to recognize hidden meanings. Chaz Bono's path is marked by this alternation between private experimentation – often with mistakes – and the public task of appearing as a rescuer armed with self-earned knowledge. He must learn to find his own rhythm and discover joy in waiting rather than standing under pressure to deliver immediate guarantees of success.

Split Definition — Defined & Open Centers

Chaz Bono's design was characterized by a massive, constant energy foundation. Defined G-, Heart-, Sacral-, and Spleen centers created an unshakable base of self-love, willpower, vital life force, and intuitive body intelligence. This configuration suggested that Chaz Bono was their own boss, knew their worth, and had a clear inner direction. The defined G-Center structure provided a deep sense of identity and the ability to love others without being dependent. The defined Heart Center supported this with pronounced willpower and the desire to control resources and reliably fulfill promises. Sacral energy offered a constant source of vitality that relied on reaction rather than initiation to avoid frustration. The defined Spleen Center ensured spontaneous, intuitive judgments in the present moment, protected by a strong immune system and body awareness.

In contrast, Head-, Ajna-, Throat-, Solar Plexus-, and Root centers were open, situating Chaz Bono's influence contextually. The open Head Center tended to absorb mental pressure or confusion from the environment rather than generating consistent inspiration. The open Ajna Center allowed a flexible mind that could gather ideas but did not necessarily hold firm concepts. An open Throat meant communication was spontaneous and reactive; Chaz Bono had to learn not to actively seek attention or direct others. The open Solar Plexus absorbed emotional waves from the environment, which could lead to personalizing foreign feelings if one didn't distance themselves. Finally, the open Root Center took on external stress and adrenaline without generating it itself, requiring awareness of when this pressure should be healthily used or avoided. This openness challenged Chaz Bono not to try controlling others or unstable mental and emotional fields but rather to trust the stable inner authority of defined centers.

Channels for pioneering spirit and intuitive life force.

Chaz Bono was someone who unleashed mutative forces through authentic living, primarily serving their own individuation and personal integrity protection. His design links competitive initiation with instinctive survival power.

The Initiation Channel 51-25 connects the Heart Center via the Shock Gate (51) and Self Spirit Gate (25). This combination grants a natural competitiveness aimed at awakening individualization potential within oneself and others. It's a mystical initiation process: The 'Shock' only works effectively if invited; without this invitation, striving for initiation leads to bitterness. Chaz Bono is here to develop deeper body awareness through these challenges and encourage others by example.

Parallel to this, the Power Channel 34-57 shapes perception. It connects the Spleen Center via the Intuitive Insight Gate (57) with the Sacral Center and its Power Gate (34). This creates a sharp survival intuition coupled with sacral life force energy. The result is a strong fight-or-flight instinct along with extreme selectivity in inputs. Chaz Bono can react to dangers or vitality within fractions of a second, securing their well-being. This intuitive reaction is free from time constraints and serves solely for individual survival and maintaining healthy vitality.

Additionally, gates like 63 (Doubt) and 64 (Past Experiences), which propel mental processes forward, as well as Gate 5 (Rhythm), which fosters firm habits for energy building, round out the picture. Gates 18 (Correction) and 46 (Devotion) emphasize discrimination between what is important and unimportant and full engagement in the process. This configuration supports Chaz Bono's role as an individualized person who is both competitive and trusts their inner authority.

Individual Circuitry — Circuit Signature

Chaz Bonos design tended towards strong internal strength and individuality, focusing little outward but on self-worth and divine identity. The Centering Circuit connected only the Identity- with the Heart-Center (Channel 25-51) in Chaz Bono. This strengthened the belief 'I am as I am', leading to some melancholy or introversion since the circuit lacked a connection to the Throat Center. Firm internal convictions were often hard to articulate verbally.

As Chaz Bono had a Split Definition, these centers existed separately from a second group: the Sacral and Spleen Centers (Channel 34-57). These two groups did not form a direct energetic bridge but worked as parallel, coexisting forces. The second connection belonged to the Integration Circuit. This was about personal survival and power gain through reacting to life (Gate 34) and intuitive knowledge (Gate 57). This mechanism complemented the internal strength of the Centering Circuit by focusing on the present moment and securing one's resources. The pulsating energy of the first circuit colored the entire chart, while the second connection emphasized practical adaptability to life circumstances. Both aspects shaped Chaz Bono as someone with deeply rooted self-worth whose expression was more through their being and reactions than words.

Right Angle Cross of Consciousness 1

Chaz Bono revealed himself through the right cross of consciousness 1 as someone carrying a deep, often unspoken longing for spiritual fulfillment and inner truth. This design sets a foundational stance that goes beyond mere intellectual understanding; it is an existential need to grasp the meaning of existence and connect with something greater.

In Human Design, the right cross of consciousness 1 describes a specific archetypal mechanism: It marks the beginning of a spiritual journey characterized by personal experience and inner transformation. Those who carry this cross do not seek external answers or dogmatic structures but rather an authentic, individual connection to the divine. This configuration promotes humility and learning as knowledge is often gained step-by-step through life experiences.

For Chaz Bono, this meant that the search for identity and truth was a central driving factor. It wasn't about quickly achieving a goal but about the process itself – constantly questioning, feeling, and integrating new insights into one's self-image. This mechanism supports an evolution where spiritual insights gradually become the basis of action without needing external validation. The energy of this cross works quietly and steadily, encouraging Chaz Bono to find inner clarity that then manifests as authenticity.

Saturn Return · Uranus Opposition · Chiron Return · 2nd Saturn Return — Life Cycles

Chaz Bonos design sets a tendency towards radical upheavals triggered by the Uranus opposition. This astronomical cycle often marks a point of deep identity shifts and structural reorganization. The energy of this configuration urges liberation from outdated patterns, even if it comes with internal turbulence.

In 2008, at age 39, Chaz Bono publicly announced his transition to being transgender and undergoing gender-affirming procedures. This event exemplifies the effect of the Uranus opposition: It was not a gradual change but a decisive break from previous external appearance and social role. The mechanism here describes a crisis as a catalyst for authenticity. The pressure to remain true to oneself outweighs fear in this phase.

The Uranus opposition forces confrontation with the question: Who am I truly, beyond expectations? For Chaz Bono, it showed as a brave acceptance of his essence. His life task was not only to accept but actively carry this new identity into the world. The cycle ended a period of adaptation and opened space for unapologetic self-actualization. It was about integrating breaks as necessary steps towards wholeness. The energy of Uranus supported breaking old structures to make room for true self. This process is intense, yet ultimately liberating and fundamental for further development.

HD Mechanics · Chapter 9/9

Generator · Sacral Authority — Synthesis

Chaz Bonos design reveals a central thread of reaction and inner drive. As a generator with sacral authority, he is destined to react to life – not initiate – thereby releasing energy through this response. The ability for spontaneous reaction is strengthened by defined root and spleen centers, signaling strong body awareness and an immediate instinct for survival. The connection between heart and G-center points towards a firm self-identity that is nonetheless modulated in interaction with the world through open centers. He takes information from his environment and processes it, making him a resonant mirror for others.

A central paradox lies in the combination of defined inner strength (sacral, heart, G-center) and open centers that make him receptive to external influences. While he possesses strong internal authority, he is also designed to adapt to life and respond to its impulses – an ongoing interplay between inner stability and outer flexibility. This tension manifests in the ability to be both deeply rooted and open to transformations.
