Biography
French author and historian whose work focused upon Languedoc in the Ancien Régime, particularly with social and economic changes of the peasantry from the 15th to 18th centuries. He became widely known after the publication of his doctoral thesis, The Peasants of Languedoc (1966). His other noted historical works include, Times of Feast, Times of Famine (1971) and The Territory of the Historian (1979).
