Upon the death of Olivia de Havilland, and later Angela Lansbury in 2022, Saint became both the oldest living and earliest surviving Academy Award-winner, and one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema.

Saint first became known as Claudia Barbour-Roberts on the radio soap, One Man's Family, a highly popular show that made its debut on 4 November 1949. She worked in theater and films in the 1950s and 1960s. Saint won acclaim for On the Waterfront opposite Marlon Brando, winning the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress on 30 March 1955.

A native of Newark, New Jersey, Saint went to New York City to become an actress. She worked in the gritty realism acting school of Elia Kazan. After her warm reception in On the Waterfront, she continued film roles in Raintree County (1957), North by Northwest (1959), Exodus (1960), Thirty-Six Hours (1964) and "Nothing in Common" (1986) with Jackie Gleason and Tom Hanks.

Saint appeared in the TV movie, Last Days of Patton (1986) with George C. Scott. She won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special for the miniseries People Like Us (1990).

Saint married television and theater director Jeffrey Hayden on 28 October 1951. The couple lived in New York City, spending their weekends on a boat with other couples. In 1965, the couple produced son Darrell and in 1969 they added daughter Laurette to the family. They moved to Los Angeles that year with their two children.
