Biography
French royal family, the nephew of Emperor Napoleon I and the son of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland. He was President of the French 2nd Republic from 1848, and ruled as Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870 when he was deposed. Napoleon III was closely associated with major European political changes.
In July 1870, Napoleon III reluctantly declared war on Prussia after pressure from the general public. The French Army was rapidly defeated and Napoleon III was captured at Sedan. He was swiftly dethroned and the Third Republic was proclaimed in Paris. After he was released from German custody, he went into exile in England, where he died on 9 January 1873 at age 64 in Chislehurst, London.
