Biography

Belgian author, entrepreneur, visionary, lawyer and peace activist; he is one of several people who have been considered the father of information science, a field he called "documentation". Otlet created the Universal Decimal Classification, one of the most prominent examples of faceted classification. Otlet was responsible for the widespread adoption in Europe of the standard American 3x5 inch index card used until recently in most library catalogs around the world (by now largely displaced by the advent of the online public access catalog (OPAC)). Otlet wrote numerous essays on how to collect and organize the world's knowledge, culminating in two books, the Traité de Documentation (1934) and Monde: Essai d'universalisme(1935).

In 1907, following a huge international conference, Otlet and Henri La Fontaine created the Central Office of International Associations, which was renamed to the Union of International Associations in 1910, and which is still located in Brussels. They also created a great international center called at first Palais Mondial (World Palace), later, the Mundaneum to house the collections and activities of their various organizations and institutes.

Otlet and La Fontaine were peace activist who endorsed the internationalist politics of the League of Nations and itsInternational Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (the forerunner of UNESCO). Otlet and La Fontaine witnessed an unprecedented proliferation of information, resulting in the creation of new kinds of international organization. They saw in this organization the an emerging global polity, and wished to help solidify. La Fontaine won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1913.

He died 10 December 1944.

The Human Design of Paul Otlet: Manifesting Generator 1/3

Paul Otlet is a Manifesting Generator in Human Design – an energy type that combines the sacral power of the Generator with the manifestation ability of the Manifestor. Manifesting Generators are multi-talented and often work on several things simultaneously.

The Manifesting Generator's strategy is to respond to impulses, inform others, and then act. Unlike pure Generators, they can skip steps and take shortcuts – this isn't a mistake but part of their design.

When Paul Otlet lives in alignment with their design, they experience deep satisfaction and fulfillment. The not-self theme is frustration and anger – frustration when the sacral energy is blocked, and anger when the manifestation power can't flow freely.

Paul Otlet has Emotional Authority – the most common authority. Decisions should never be made in an emotional high or low, but only when emotional clarity settles in. "Sleep on it" is meant literally here. The emotional wave needs time to run its course.

Paul Otlet carries the profile 1/3 – Investigator / Martyr. The 1st line represents the Investigator: a deep need for a solid foundation and thorough knowledge before feeling secure. The 3rd line represents the Experimenter: learning through trial and error, embracing life as a practical experiment and growing wise through experience.

The incarnation cross "Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix 3" describes the overarching life purpose and direction of Paul Otlet in Human Design. It consists of the four gate activations of Sun and Earth (personality and design) and only becomes felt when one lives their strategy and authority.
