Justin Trudeau

Canadian politician who served as the 23rd prime minister of Canada from 2015 to 2025. A member of the Liberal Party of Canada, he served as the party's leader from 2013 to 2025. He was also the member of parliament (MP) for Papineau, 2008-2025.

On 14 April 2013, Trudeau was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. He assumed office as PM on 4 November 2015. In both the 2019 federal election and the 2021 federal election, Trudeau secured mandates and minority governments although in both he lost the popular vote; in 2021 he received the lowest percentage of the national popular vote of a governing party in Canadian history. He resigned as PM, effective on 14 March 2025.

He comes from a Canadian noted political family and is the first born son of ex-PM Pierre Trudeau and his wife Margaret Trudeau. Justin Trudeau was the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history after Joe Clark; he was also the first to be the child or other relative of a previous holder of the post.

Trudeau first met Sophie Grégoire when they were both children growing up in Montreal. Trudeau and Grégoire became engaged in October 2004, and married on 28 May 2005 in a Catholic ceremony at Montreal's Sainte-Madeleine d'Outremont Church. They have three children, son Xavier James (b. 18 October 2007), Ella-Grace Margaret (b. 5 February 2009), and Hadrien (b. 28 February 2014). On 2 August 2023, Trudeau announced he and Grégoire had separated.

The former prime minister began dating American singer Katy Perry in 2025.
