As ambassador to Egypt he forced King Farouk to change the cabinet to an Egyptian nationalist (wafdist) one, by surrounding the king's palace with tanks, on the night of 4th February 1942.
He was then Special Commissioner in Southeast Asia between 1946 and 1948. He was awarded a peerage as Baron Killearn, of Killearn in the County of Stirling, Scotland (the place of his birth).
