Biography
Abandoned by her dad at the age of six, Petra was educated by Catholic nuns and raised largely by her grandmother while her mom worked to support the family. When she was 11, her mom married an American Army officer who moved the family to the U.S., to Ft. Bening, Georgia. Petra became a classic overachiever; cheerleader, member of the student senate, scholarship winner. Despite physical pain from lifelong kidney ailments and the emotional trauma associated with the death of her younger half sister Grace, she was able to maintain an almost maniacal focus on achievement. She returned to Europe for post grad study and her beginning involvement in European Federalist politics. She began an affair with the 65-year-old married EC president Sicco Mansholt, the first of a number of affairs with politically powerful older men.
Kelly had a long-term companionship with 25-year older Gert Bastian, a former NATO General who had done under-cover spy work. As brilliant, romantic and mercurial as Petra was, Bastian in contrast was plodding methodical and obsessive. To all evidence, their love was compelling and uncompromising.
On 19 October 1992, they were both found dead in their Bonn home with a gunshot to the head.. Whether their deaths were suicide or murder was unresolved and the case remained a mystery.
Human Design Analysis: Petra Kelly as Projector 1/4
Projector 1/4 — Design at a Glance
Petra Kelly's design featured a tendency towards precise system analysis. As a Projector, she did not have an intrinsic constant energy source like other types but rather acted more like a focused beam of light that targeted weaknesses in her environment. This mechanism allowed her to immediately recognize where systems were failing or "in the dark." However, this direct perception of flaws carried the risk of being perceived as unpleasant or accusatory when she addressed these shortcomings openly.
Her optimal strategy involved waiting for a respectful and honest invitation from others before sharing her insights. Instead of directly criticizing other people's problems, she was most effective by serving as a living example of functional connections herself. Through this attractive presence, people actively sought her advice. Since her Sacral Center was undefined, her energy followed a rhythmic pattern: phases of high productivity alternated with necessary rest periods to prevent burnout. If she lived according to the strategy of invitation and rhythm, she was rewarded with success. Ignoring these needs and trying to push against the resistance of her environment eventually led to her Non-Self theme: Bitterness.
Emotional Authority
Petra Kelly's inner authority was emotional, carried by her defined Solar Plexus Center. This meant that her decision-making was always influenced by a wave-like movement of feelings, regardless of which other centers were defined in her design. Emotional authority takes precedence here: any other defined energy is subject to this rhythmic fluctuation.
Her perception of the world was colored by her current mood. At one moment she could be totally enthusiastic about something, and in the next view the same matter negatively. However, these intense feelings were only snapshots, first impressions that did not necessarily reflect a deeper truth yet. Quick, spontaneous decisions made from such an emotional state often had negative consequences as they were based on fleeting impulses.
Instead, her design required patience and time to gain clarity. Petra Kelly needed to let decisions mature, often through multiple nights of reflection. Only when the intense feelings subsided and an emotional distance was gained did calmness set in. This process was particularly crucial for long-term life decisions. By enduring this emotional wave, she arrived at more comprehensive insights that went beyond the initial, often misleading impression. Her strength lay not in immediate reaction but in her ability to penetrate through the emotional turbulence to reach her true inner truth.
The 1/4 Profile — Investigator / Opportunist
Petra Kelly's design inclined towards in-depth research that always served a familiar network. As a Researcher/Networker (Profile 1/4), she combined the urgent desire for detailed investigation with the need to share this knowledge within a close community. This configuration created a specific tension: While Line 1 through Gate 9 alleviated frustrations and secured attention through precise detail work and the creation of new forms, Line 4 in Gate 40 demanded influence within a network. This required a balance between active willpower and necessary rest phases to prevent burnout. The fear of not knowing enough or being exposed before this familiar group strongly shaped her inner attitude; only in an environment of deep trust could she fully unfold her potential. Through this combination of thorough analysis and the ability to seize opportunities at the right moment within the network, Petra Kelly developed into an authority on her heart issues. Her design showed that quality stood above quantity – a protective mechanism against overload caused by striving for broad influence without adequate recovery. Thus, her deep knowledge became the glue for her community, using patterns and habits to maintain her focus while also preserving the accuracy of her network contacts.
Split Definition — Defined & Open Centers
Petra Kelly's design indicated a tendency towards consequent, self-determined willpower paired with clear inner direction. Her defined Heart Center endowed her with the ability to keep promises and actively steer her own resources and life path. This worked in conjunction with her defined G Center, which created a stable sense of self-identity and a firm sense of personal mission. She knew who she was and where she stood without being dependent on others.
This inner structure resulted in powerful expressive abilities: Through the connection between Ajna (mental thinking) and Throat Centers, she could directly articulate her conceptual ideas and theories. Her mind was a continuous process that processed data and then manifested it through a defined voice. However, her decision-making wasn't purely cognitive; her defined Solar Plexus acted as an emotional authority. She needed time to let the waves of her feelings pass before gaining clarity. Impulsive reactions were avoided in favor of a deeper emotional truth that only became apparent after initial excitement subsided.
At the same time, Petra Kelly was receptive to external influences through open centers. Her open Head Center made her susceptible to mental pressure and questions from others, which could lead her to engage with problems not her own. Additionally, her open Root Center absorbed environmental stress and adrenaline rushes. This external pressure could result in a feeling of being overwhelmed since it didn't originate from her own energy source. Furthermore, her open Sacral Center meant she did not generate constant vital energy but instead took on and amplified the life force of others, leading to exhaustion if boundaries were ignored. This openness required her to consciously choose which energies and pressure forms she allowed in order not to overload her defined inner strength.
Channels for intuition, inspiration, insight and community.
Petra Kelly's design indicated a tendency towards exemplary leadership where she lived out her unique identity to inspire others. The Inspiration Channel 1-8 connected her G Center with the Throat Center; it didn't work through explanations but by leading by example, expressing a creative perspective authentically. As a role model, she drew attention and transformed the perception of her surroundings by genuinely expressing her individuality.
Alongside this public impact, Petra Kelly sought hidden truths and perfected her skills through repeated experimentation. The Wave Length Channel 48-16 connected the Spleen Center with the Throat Center. Here, she combined the intuitive depth of Gate 48, which sensed vital information, with the dexterity of Gate 16. Through engagement and practice, she transformed raw ability into talent; her mastery often served a deeper purpose and improved others' lives, with recognition as essential reward for this process.
Her thinking also showed itself through spontaneous insights that promoted efficiency. The Structuring Channel 23-43 connected the Ajna Center with the Throat Center. Gate 43 received innovative perspectives as breakthroughs while Gate 23 assimilated and clearly articulated them. Petra Kelly's challenge was to give space to this inner knowledge; when her timing was right, her way of explaining led to quantitative leaps in collective understanding due to her efficient communication of complex connections.
Additionally, Gate 9 in the Sacral Center shaped her work through detailed focus and taming of details. This energy allowed her to concentrate on patterns and perfect them through repetition, though this could also lead to exhaustion without corresponding energy fulfillment.
Individual Circuitry — Circuit Signature
Petra Kelly's design indicated a tendency towards structured emotional communication. The Knowledge Circuit connected her Ajna, Throat, and Identity Centers directly in her case. This created a flow of creative insights (Channel 20-57) through inspiring impulses (Channel 1-8) to linguistic structuring (Channel 43-23). She was someone who filtered new insights through emotions and then clearly articulated them. Parallel to this, the Understanding Circuit worked: Here, the Channel 'The Wave Length' (16-48) connected the Throat Center with the Spleen. This allowed her to share logical strategies and focused future visions precisely - free from emotional overload since the Solar Plexus Center was not involved here. A third strand formed the Ego Circuit. In Petra Kelly, this connected Heart and Solar Plexus Centers via the Channel 'Community' (37-40). This shaped her actions through a relationship of giving and receiving as well as mutual support without direct connection to the constant life force of the Sacral Center. Due to shared definition, these circuits existed as separate, parallel forces: The first group (G-, Throat-, Spleen-, Ajna) formed a continuous flow from identity over language to strategic perception. The second group (Heart, Solar Plexus) stood isolated and provided emotional resonance in interpersonal exchange processes. Petra Kelly lived these separated energetic fields not as one whole but as parallel, complementary tendencies: once through innovative, structured speech, the other through cooperative, emotionally-driven connection.
Right Angle Cross of Planning 4
Petra Kelly's design carried the structure of the right cross of planning four. This configuration established a specific internal architecture oriented towards strategic action and recognizing patterns in complex systems. The right cross of planning four is not just a random collection of features but an integrated mechanism aimed at creating order out of chaos. It grants the ability to see long-term connections and plan actions not impulsively, but within the context of larger processes.
For Petra Kelly, this meant that her energy was not set on spontaneous, unpredictable bursts but rather on careful preparation and thinking through paths. The mechanics of this cross support a stance of patience and strategic distance. It's about understanding how parts work together before acting. This created in her a fundamental disposition towards analysis and waiting for the right moment when planning could unfold its effect. She was programmed to recognize structures and work effectively within these limits rather than fighting against them. This inner logic shaped her way of dealing with challenges: not through blind activism, but by recognizing underlying rules and skillfully using them.
Saturn Return · Uranus Opposition — Life Cycles
Petra Kelly's design laid a tendency towards structural anchoring that unfolded in clear institutional frameworks. As a Generator, she responded to internal resonance, steering her actions through deeper confirmation before carrying them outward. This mechanism became active in 1973: At the age of 26, during her first Saturn Return, she founded the Grace P. Kelly Association e.V. This cycle marked the transition from individual impulsiveness to a stable structure; years of groundwork condensed here into a solid foundation for her professional work.
Later, a dynamic of change emerged in her design, accelerated by external events. The Uranus opposition around age 40 often brings unexpected upheavals or new perspectives challenging the status quo. For Petra Kelly, this effect became apparent in 1987: At 40 years old, she regained her Bundestag mandate after being elected again. This event underscores how her inner authority synchronized with external opportunities; success was no coincidence but the result of a stance that held firm despite political turbulence and opened new action spaces. Her path illustrated how internal resonance and cyclical changes together formed sustainable political presence.
Projector · Emotional Authority — Synthesis
Petra Kelly was a Projector whose life was marked by deep insight and the desire to share this knowledge with others. Her defined Mental Center (Ajna) points to a consistent ability to develop concepts and influence others through her perspectives – she quickly saw flaws in systems and had an inner judgment power. This tendency was reinforced by the Channel of Inspiration (Gate 1/8), which included a creative expression and readiness to step forward as an individual and inspire others.
A central paradox in her design lay in the interplay between emotional authority and the knowledge circuit. While she needed time for decisions to mature and experience emotions, the Channel of Inspiration simultaneously urged her to publicly express her knowledge and initiate changes. The founding of an association (1973) and regaining a political mandate (1987) demonstrated this inner pull between the need for deep emotional clarity and the impulsive power to move things.
